NEW YEAR RACE LARGS 2nd January 2013
Three boats, Lady Rhona, Solus and Prospero made it to the start line for the Largs New Year Race. The course was Great Cumbrae to starboard, once round, start/finish line between the marina safe water mark and south breakwater light. Heavy rain and a moderate breeze from the south west greeted the competitors. Lady Rhona and Solus made good starts with Prospero taking a more conservative approach. Lady Rhona moved into an early lead and passed Lion Rock well offshore. Solus took an early tack into the Cumbrae shore which allowed her to move clear of Prospero. Beyond Farland point the wind increased to nearly 30 knts giving the boats a stiff beat up to the Tan mark. Lady Rhona, well ahead by now had a few moments excitement, breaking a jib sheet.
Following the Tan rounding an easy reach was enjoyed, some less competitive sailors even took the opportunity to break out the mulled wine and mince pies provided by the Commodore.
Once round the north of Cumbrae and into the sheltered water to the east of the island conditions were lighter again and easy sailing brought all three boats safely to the finish line.
A post race gathering at The Village Inn was enjoyed by all.
